Ridge Student Receives NJ Tourette Center Scholarship

Annual scholarship for statewide organization awarded to Ridge High School student.

senior Thomas J. Stanley has been named by The New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome & Associated Disorders as a recipient of the 2012 NJCTS Children's Scholarship.

Stanley was selected for his academic achievement, community service and accomplishments as an individual with Tourette Syndrome – a neurological disorder that affects 1 in 100 children, according to the statewide Tourette Syndrome organization that is based in Somerville.

Stanley has been a regular participant on the Ridge winter and spring track & field squads, taking part in the high jump, javelin and pole vault; and worked with Ridge Production Club on filming, editing, directing and producing.

Stanley was the inspiration for the development of the annual New Jersey Walks for TS event in Mendham and helped his cousin, Emily Carrara, in their partnership with NJCTS to create the event, the announcement said.

The NJCTS announcement congratulates Stanley, who has yet to decide his postsecondary education plans, on his achievements and wishes him continued success in his academic and career endeavors. He received a $500 scholarship.

Since 2001, the NJCTS Children's Scholarship Award has been awarded to more than 200 outstanding high school seniors in New Jersey who have excelled in their schools, communities and lives. Those students represent themselves as excellent advocates for Tourette Syndrome.
