Bernards Schools Open, Municipal Offices and Library Closed on MLK Holiday

Holiday also closes Somerset County Senior Center.

Monday's federal holiday to recognize slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will close municipal offices and the Bernards Township Library — but not local schools.

All Bernards Township municipal offices will be closed for the holiday, according to the Bernards Township website.

The library at 32 S. Maple Ave., after being closed for the holiday, will reopen on Tuesday for scheduled events for the rest of the week. Information is online.

The holiday to recognize Martin Luther King's birthday has been in previous Bernards Township school holidays. The holiday had been placed in the 2012-13 calendar, but was removed when days were added back to the calendar to recognize Hurricane Sandy.

This year — and in coming years — the day was removed as a holiday from school calendars in an effort to move up the last day of the school year, which had extended until the last week of June in recent years.
