International Day, Book Signing, More Events

The next few days are filled with cultural events, fall fun with a hint of Halloween and even breast cancer awareness programs.

Below is the combination of our weekly pick of upcoming activities, offering both fun weekend activities and great family-friendly fun at the same time.

International Festival at Somerset Hills YMCA
When/Where: Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 140 Mount Airy Road, Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Sample our local cultural variety with sights, sounds and (maybe best of all) tastes. The event will feature music, dance performances, food and art that represent more than twenty countries. Additionally, there will be samples of international cuisine, clothing, pottery, books and more. 
Cost: A donation of $10 per family or $5 per individual is suggested to benefit the Somerset Hills YMCA’s many international efforts.

National Wildlife Federation’s Hike and Seek
When/Where: Saturday at 9 a.m. on Hardscrabble Road in Bernardsville.
Why Go: Because the program is a fundraising opportunity that combines a 1.5-mile nature hike and scavenger hunt, with additional wildlife guests in attendance.
Cost: $7.

B.I.G. Basking Ridge POD - DeMystifying Social Media
When/Where: Sunday at 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 140 S. Finley Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go: If social media is one of the mysteries of life for you, you can hear guest speaker Bobi Commer discuss "Demystifying Social Media."
Cost: Free.

Friday Night at the Opera: Anna Bolena
When/Where: Friday, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.. at the 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge. Other library events are online.
Why Go: Enjoy clips of opera productions with lively commentary and background by Dr. Robert Butts, part of a series. Friday night is "Anna Bolena" by Donizetti.
Cost: To register for the series, send a check for $25/6 lectures made payable to 'Friends of the Bernards Township Library' to Jacquelyn Ridzy, Bernards Township Library, 32 S. Maple Ave, Basking Ridge, NJ, 07920 or pay $5/lecture at the door.

Martinsville Fire House Open House
When/Where: Saturday at 10 a.m. at the fire house on Washington Valley Road in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because the fire company will be holding its annual open house to celebrate Fire Prevention Week, with fire trucks on display, fire prevention tips and a dunk-the-firefighter tank.
Cost: Free.

Book Signing — "The Weather House"
When/Where: Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at The Bookworm, 99 Claremont Road, Bernardsville.
Why Go: Because Dr. Gary Eddey, a Morristown resident who also is on staff at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center in Peapack-Gladstone, will be on hand to meet and sign his book, "The Weather House."
Cost: Free, book to purchase.

Chip Mergott and Annie Bauerlein in Concert
When/Where: Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Raritan Valley Seventh Day Baptist Church on Route 202 in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because it will be a night of Christian music with these singers and songwriters.
Cost: Free.

Green Knoll Rescue Squad Garage Sale
When/Where: Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Green Knoll Rescue Squad on North Bridge Street in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because who doesn’t love a good garage sale, and the event will benefit the rescue squad.
Cost: Just the cost of what you buy.

Friends of Somerset Regional Animal Shelter Walk
When/Where: Sunday at 10 a.m. at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because the animal shelter is holding its second annual walk, sponsored by Camp Bow Wow of Bridgewater. The walk is about 3 miles, and the proceeds will benefit the shelter.
Cost: $25.

Breast Cancer Program
When/Where: Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center on Talamini Road in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because the program, being sponsored by Hadassah and Temple Sholom Sisterhood, will feature a woman sharing her breast cancer journey, and how she got through it.
Cost: Free. 

Somerville YMCA’s 2nd Annual Spooky Sprint 5K
When/Where: Saturday at 8 a.m. on Grove Street in Somerville.
Why Go: Because it’s the month of Halloween, and it’s time for a 5K race to help the YMCA, while also being welcome to wear costumes in the race. Participants are also being encouraged to bring a can of food to benefit the local food bank, and proceeds from the race will go to the Somerville Y’s Strong Kids Campaign.
Cost: $25 for at-the-door registration (early entry fees had to be received by Oct. 3 for the lower prices).
