St. James Parishioners Choose T-Shirt Winner For 5K 'Kindness' Race

T-shirt design voted on for St. James Men of Charity 5K for Kindness coming up in May.

The results of the 690 votes cast after Masses last week at Saint James Church in Basking Ridge are in: 14-year-old Michelle Singer is the winner of the 5K for Kindness and 1 Mile Walk T-shirt design contest, sponsored by the St. James Men of Charity.

Shirts with Michelle's design will be given out to those who are pre-registered and as available on race day, which is scheduled for May 16.

Second place was by Thomas Hober, 11, and third place by Jessica Booth, 12, all township residents. Michelle receives a $50 gift certificate along with the honor of having her design featured on the Race/Walk t-Shirts.

The call-out for the contest was to all students in the Somerset Hills area under age 18. This year, all contestant participants who submitted a design also will receive a $10 gift card from Penguin Ice Cream of Bernardsville.

"The Men of Charity greatly appreciate the support of the community and especially the creativity and fine effort that the students put into their designs," according to the announcement of the winners' names.

The 5K for Kindness and 1 Mile Walk is a USATF-certified course and is scheduled for Thursday, 6:45 p.m., May 16, at St. James on South Finley Avenue, just south of the center of downtown Basking Ridge. Last year’s event featured over 100 runners and walkers.

To sign up for the race and walk, or to make a donation, please check the following link for online registration and information. All proceeds from the race will support the charitable needs of our local community.

Packet pick-up and registration on the day of the race will begin at 5:30 p.m.  The 1 mile walk starts at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third overall male/female runners, as well as first, second and third in 10-year age groups.

Water will be provided to runners and refreshments also will be provided after the race.

All proceeds from this event will benefit local acts of kindness and service performed by the Men of Charity of St. James Church.

The Men of Charity, a ministry group of the St. James Church in Basking Ridge, is dedicated to performing acts of kindness and service inside and outside the St. James parish community.

The Men of Charity was formed in 2008 to engage in charitable service to the community at large, including clothing drives, volunteering at soup kitchens, and coordinating home repairs. Through the members' fundraising efforts, the Men of Charity also make donations to individual families in time of need.
