EVENTS: Last Days for Two Art Shows

Saturday night blues & wine, also arts, cookery and wacky science.

Winter, such as it was, is drawing to a close and so is the week off from school for Bernards Township students. So we should all be relaxed, right?

True or not, there are ways to have fun, learn something or cheer on your high school's athletes.

And if you'd like to support the Bernards High Ski Racing Team in adult fashion, there's a delicious-sounding evening listed below that mixes blues, wine and food.

Ridge and Pingry ice hockey teams faced off in Friday night's Skyland Cup championship at 8 p.m. at the Bridgewater Sports Arena. Pingry defeated Montgomery to get to the final. Ridge defeated Bridgewater to get to the final with a score of 4 to 3 last Tuesday night. Ridge scored the winning goal in the game against Bridgewater with 1:26 left in the game.

Demonstrations about the way that Native Americans made maple syrup were to run all through the weekend at the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge.

Activities for children and adults are included below:

Maple Sugaring Demonstration
When/Where: At the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, both Saturday and Sunday, at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
Why Go: To traipse around the woods, and learn about the traditional way in which sap was drawn from maple trees, and transformed into maple sugar and syrup. Sample included!
Cost: Free

Community Art Show
When/Where:
The first Bernards Township Community Art Show will remain at the in Basking Ridge through Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Closed on Feb. 13 and 20.
Why Go: A variety of art pieces from 40 local artists — who knew we had so much talent in our own backyard?

"The Philadelphia Experiment" - Ridge High School Art Show
When/Where: Weekends, 1-4 p.m. Feb. 4 to 29, at the 650 King George Road in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: “The Philadelphia Experiment” is the title of an art show that includes drawings, paintings, and photos by the talented art and photography students at . The artwork is inspired by a field trip to Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, Reading terminal, and the surrounding area.
Cost: Free 


When/Where:
On Saturday, Feb. 25, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., the 8th annual Food and Wine Event to raise funds for the Bernards High ski racing team will be held at the Liberty Corner firehouse, 95 Church St., in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards.
Why Go: 
Raise funds for the entirely parent-supported ski team, while getting to hear the music of the Blues Hall of Fame's Johnny Charles Band, featuring Nasty Ned. In addition to a night of great food and music, there will be a wine
tasting courtesy of 56 Degree Wine of Bernardsville.

'Cat in the Hat' Fun
When/Where: Thursday, 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Bernards Township Library, 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge. Must be accompanied by an adult.
Why Go: Join Ann Coppola (Mother Goose) and Kate Pak for a fun interactive program sprinkled with tidbits of nonsense. Additional library activities for children, tweens and teens are listed on the library website.
Cost: Free

 Ice Hockey Championships, Ridge vs. Pingry
When/Where: Friday at 8 p.m. at the  on Frontier Road in Bridgewater.
Why Go: It's practically a subway series as the boys varsity ice hockey team takes on team in the Skyland Cup Finals.
Cost: $5 entry fee

Tom Klimchock Performance
When/Where: Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the .
Why Go: To listen to contemporary songs of George Strait, Toby Keith and Lonestar, and the classics of Gene Autry, Hank Williams and George Jones, all sung by 18-year country music veteran Tom Klimchock.
Cost: Free.

When/Where: Friday at 6 p.m. at Zebu Forno, Morristown
Why Go:
You're interested in chatting about books over a slice of pizza or three.
Cost: Free

Summer Day Camp Open House
When/Where: Friday at 10 a.m. at the Somerset Valley YMCA on Green Street in Somerville.
Why Go: To learn about the more than 40 day camps offered by the Somerset Valley YMCA in Bridgewater and Somerville.
Cost: Free.

Wacky Science
When/Where: Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m. at the on Vogt Drive.
Why Go: To see some fun science projects and wacky science performances through mad scientists. There are two shows being held because of popular demand, one at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Registration is required, and there is a wait list.
Cost: Free.

Believe in our Community
When/Where: Saturday at 2 p.m. at the  on Vogt Drive.
Why Go: To learn about faith in cross-cultural conflict through a program at the library with Christopher Taylor, PhD., who is starting his series of programs for Building Common Ground.
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Stanley Congregational Church, 94 Fairmount Ave, Chatham, 8 a.m. Saturday
Why go: Because it's tough to stay fit in the winter, and here's an easy way to have a little exercise.
