Some More Things to Try on Week Off From School

Hurry on over to see a resident's grand opening of a yogurt shop, head to this weekend's maple sugaring demonstration.

It's late afternoon on Wednesday — you're more than halfway through your childrens' week off from school in Bernards Township, and you've got a few more days to go.

Now what?

Well, if you are one of those families who went skiing for the week, or are sitting on a beach in Florida, you're probably not reading this.

But what if you already took that skier, or skiers, in your house for a short trip north just to get on a slope where the temperatures actually have dropped below freezing this winter? (check) Tried to drum up extra community service hours required for your Ridge High School student. (check)

Managed to get the garage cleaned up at least somewhat. (check) And maneuvered to get that pizza party being planned in your living room to Domino's instead. (score!!)

Well, you can hurry on over to the grand opening 16 Handles, a yogurt shop owned by Bernards Township at 6 Mount Bethel Road in nearby Warren. Until 5 p.m. Wednesday, the grand opening will include discounted prices on yogurt, face painters and balloon makers. The shop also will give away some Somerset Patriots tickets and Big Apple Circus tickets, Domenick said.

And this weekend you can head over to the Environmental Education Center's multiple maple sugar demonstrations that continue through this Saturday and Sunday, and into March. Other events at the EEC in Basking Ridge, including a chance for kids and adults to learn how to make home spa treatments from natural ingredients in a program scheduled for 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday at the EEC, are listed on the Somerset County Parks Commission website. Or call 908-766-2489.

As always, the Bernards Township Library has a list of things to do, including Thursday's "Cat in the Hat" fun, for ages five and under with an adult, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Visit the library online, call 908-204-3031 or just stop by the library at 32 S. Maple Ave.

Or get out to cheer on your local student athletes, as things heat up with final tournaments at the end of the winter season. The Ridge Varsity ice hockey team will play The Pingry School in the Skylands Conference Ice Hockey Cup Tournament at 8 p.m. this Friday at the Bridgewater Sports Arena.

This is also a great week for day trips! The Crayola FACTORY in nearby Easton, Pa. is always a favorite for younger children. With older (maybe artsy) teens, don't forget how cool Princeton is! Or just pile everyone in the back seat and head off to one of your favorite informal eateries!

Here's a link to last week's Get Out column on some things to do for both adults and children. Let us know if you have any other ideas for places to go and things to do on your week off from school! We'll have more on Thursday.
