Annual Electronics Recycling at Verizon

Stop by for free disposal of many electronic items, including televisions, at Verizon Center in Basking Ridge.

Consumers and businesses can bring unwanted electronics for disposal to the visitor parking lot overflow area of the Verizon Center off North Maple Avenue through 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The free collection is part of Verizon’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, according to an announcement from Verizon.

The collection is held annually in Basking Ridge, and about once a month at one of the other Verizon locations nationwide, said Eric Jimenez, a company employee with Verizon's Investment Recovery department who was at the site.

Unlike past events, televisions and CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors will be accepted this year, according to an announcement from Verizon.

Verizon’s goal this year is to collect 350,000 pounds of recyclable materials — and by shortly before noon, the operation had collected about 15 pallets of discarded electronics, Jimenez said.

The supplier disposing of the discarded items — SHI International of Somerset — will adhere to Verizon’s zero-landfill objective, meaning the materials will be reused or recycled so that they do not end up in a landfill, according to spokepersons from the company and at the collection location.

Other accepted items include laptop and desktop computers; LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors; computer cables; mice; keyboards; gaming consoles; telephones and answering machines; stereo and audio equipment; paper shredders; alarm clocks; printers; cameras; conferencing equipment; remote controls; earphones; small electronic appliances; and electronic toys without batteries. Hard drives will not be wiped.

Items that will not be accepted include hazardous waste (such as batteries, inks/toners, mercury bulbs); units containing fluid-like motors and pumps; refrigerators and freezers; medical waste; and radioactive material including X-ray equipment.
