Residents Face Fines for Encroaching on Public Land

The Bernards Township Committee followed through on giving final approval to a new ordinance that will potentially impose fines of up to $2,000 and, in theory, up to 90 days jail time, for building or planting or otherwise "encroaching" on public land or easements on private property for such purposes as protection of the environment. Township Engineer Tom Timko said 100 instances of encroaching on public property already have been identified, and those people would be warned to remove the encroachment as a first step.
