NJ American Water Rejects Radio Tower Proposal

Public opposition to the antenna spurred the denial

In an email to the township on Monday, March 29, NJ American Water, owners and operators of the Knollcroft Water Tower, declared their rejection of New Jersey Network's proposal to build a radio antenna on top of the tower.

Jason Gonzalez, Vice President of Government Affairs for NJ American Water, said, "After an internal review of this request, it was decided that the neighbors of the tank should be made aware of this request and have an opportunity to advise the Township Committee of their views at a public hearing where it would be discussed."

The response at the township committee meeting was overwhelmingly negative. Residents complained about the visual impact as well as potential health risks, and many filled out a petition that was sent to NJ American Water.

"It was also decided that New Jersey American Water would not approve the placement of NJN's FM antenna unless the community supported it," Gonzalez said. " At the meeting of the Township Committee on March 9, 2010, and subsequently through the petition ... it was made clear that local support for this antenna does not exist. As such, New Jersey American Water will not approve NJN's request to place an FM antenna on our Knollcroft Tank."

The decision to reject the proposal will be acknowledged formally at the township committee's April 13 meeting, according to Township Clerk Denise Szabo.
