Play Sports Outdoors...On Nintendo Wii!

Come to Harry Dunham Park Wednesday, July 21 to show off true athletic skills.

Show off your Nintendo Wii skills at Family Game Night, Wednesday, July 21 in Harry Dunham Park.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is setting up Wii Sports on a big screen for all to enjoy. Participants will be able to show off their virtual athletic abilities while their families and friends cheer them on!

"We project the Wii onto our 10 ft screen in front of the Dunham Park indoor room," explained Sean O'Grady, assistant Parks & Recreation director.

"We use up to 4 controllers at a time. The kids can compete against each other side-by-side with some of the sports like tennis. Other times they are playing solo, say with bowling," O'Grady said.

Family Game Night is part of the extensive program of offerings the Department of Parks & Recreation is sponsoring this summer.

"Wii Sports is a relative newcomer to the list, but is gaining in popularity. "It's particularly fun for the younger kids," O'Grady said.

Wii Sports was introduced by Nintendo in 2006 and is considered the best selling video game of all time. The sports include bowling, baseball, tennis, golf and boxing.

Using handheld remotes, players actively take part in the game, their actions are simulated with Mii characters on the animated screen.  While kids are definite fans, players of all ages get a kick out of testing their athletic talents in a virtual world.

For many, Wii Sports may be their first introduction to a sport. Never played golf? Here you don't even have to purchase a club. And baseball? You don't even need a whole team.

As with any sport, the competition leads to excitement and camaraderie."We are expecting about 30 – 40 people," stated Sean. "We wait until 8:45pm for the sun to go down. More and more people are seeing what fun it can be. And really it is a family fun night."

The evening's activities will be staffed by Department of Parks & Recreation personnel. The games are free and the event will happen rain or shine.  If it does rain the activity will move into the Indoor Room.
