Newcomer Gets Most Votes, Incumbents Also Re-Elected to Bernards BOE

Candidate John Groot, who received the fewest votes, said he already had dropped out of race.

A newcomer, Christopher Viereck, received the most votes cast for candidates in a race for three seats on the Bernards Township Board of Education that looked like it was contested — but wasn't really.

Board of Education incumbents Elaine Kusel and Michael Byrne were re-elected to additional three-year seats on the board, along with Viereck filling the third seat up for election this year.

Viereck received 2,649 votes, compared with 2,550 for Kusel and 2,527 for Byrne.

John Groot, who had been running as the fourth candidate for the three seats, received 1,680 votes on Tuesday. But Groot had announced earlier that he had decided not to run against the  three other candidates, whom he described as highly qualified and experienced.

Board member William Koch had decided not to see re-election for another term.
