Food Drive With A Twist: Basking Ridge Organization Donates Fresh Produce

Goal to provide fresh produce for healthy meals to Food Bank Network of Somerset County by next week.

Curbing Hunger, Inc., based in Basking Ridge, is once again helping those who are hungry in Somerset County, but this time with a unique twist; an online fresh produce drive to support the Food Bank Network of Somerset County that continues through next week.

However, instead of dropping off produce at a location, the food drive asks that donors go online to purchase fresh apples, oranges, lettuce or sweet potatoes that can be used for a healthy meal, perhaps on Thanksgiving, by Nov. 15.

The fresh food drive is being conducted online through You Give Goods.

Since 1995, Curbing Hunger has been raising food to support the food bank through out the State of New Jersey during times when donations drop. Curbing Hunger has raised over 2.1 million pounds of food for this purpose.

Due to low supplies at the Food Bank Network, Curbing Hunger is running this campaign to provide some immediate help.

Chuck Knill, President of Curbing Hunger, said, “I recently spoke with the head of the Food Bank Network, Marie Scannell, who told me that they are continuing to see a high level of need and that they are struggling to get the food they need to help these people.”

“We partnered with YouGiveGoods this past June for our annual campaign and it led to the best results we have seen in years," Knill said. He said the organization recently learned about the new Fresh Produce program and has been anxious to use it.

"It fits perfectly with our mission to raise nutritious, healthy food and it couldn’t come at a better time," Knill said.

Pat O’Neill, CEO of YouGiveGoods, said more people and organizations are recognizing that the best way to help the hungry is not simply with any food, but with high quality food.

"With a traditional food drive, you can’t raise perishable goods because they will spoil long before they reach their destination," O'Neill said. "Our system fixes that.”

Anyone can get involved with the cause that Curbing Hunger is supporting by going to http://www.yougivegoods.com/OurFirstFreshProduceDrive. Fresh Produce can be purchased online to donate to the Drive.

The drive will continue until Nov. 15, after which YouGiveGoods will deliver the items to The Food Bank Network of Somerset County. Supporters will receive an e-mail to let them know when the goods have been delivered, Knill said.
