UPDATED: Saturday Was a Slippery Day on Route 78 and 287

Day of accidents and stuck vehicles accidents at several locations kept state and local police busy on Saturday.

State police said that ice had cleared by 6 p.m., but a few vehicles — including a tractor trailer — had gotten stuck on slippery Routes 287 and 78 as night began to fall.

With the prospect of wet roads freezing as the night went on, state police from Somerville barracks had advice for those who were thinking of heading out in their vehicles: Stay home.

Accidents continued into Saturday afternoon on interstates 78 and 287, even though most of the ice had cleared by then, state police said earlier.

Township police also said that vehicles sliding on icy roads had been involved  in some accidents earlier in the day, and that some cars became stuck on ice.

Conditions had improved by mid-afternoon, said both township and state police.

But state police still warned motorists to take it easy in driving and stay home in the evening unless travel was necessary. No major injuries were reported  on the highways during the day, according to state police.

Earlier during the day, state police had reported that interstates 78 and 287 were salted following a number of multi-vehicle accidents involving cars sliding on the icy highway on Saturday morning.

About three or four vehicles involved in a pileup near milepost 29 on I-287 south had just been cleared at about 10:30 a.m., state reported.

Two separate accidents had taken place at about 9 a.m. between milepost 32 and 33 on I-78 west, according to state police. About two cars were involved in each of those accidents, state police said.

No serious injuries were reported in the morning accidents, state police said.
