Traffic Light is Up, But Not On

Traffic signal awaiting go ahead from utility company, designed to let vehicles coming off Route 287 safely cross Mount Airy Road.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has completed installation of a new traffic signal on Mount Airy Road at the intersection with ramps leading from exit 26, but is still waiting for the local utility to activate the light, a DOT spokesman said Friday.

The installation cost the DOT approximately $114,000 and was funded by state, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley. The state will handle maintenance of the traffic signal, but the town will cover the monthly electrical cost to operate the signal, Greeley said.

The DOT still is waiting for information for when the light will be turned on, Greeley said.

The would allow vehicles to more safely turn across oncoming lanes of traffic when exiting Route 287.

"Normally, a signal like this first gets turned on with a test period — lasting one to three days —to allow for driver familiarity," Greeley said in an email. The light would then be fully activated, he said.
