Allen Road Construction Continues Into Another Week

Road being milled and paved piecemeal to avoid closures in Bernards and Bedminster.

With old pavement removed and some new pavement already laid along stretches of Allen Road in Basking Ridge and Schley Mountain Road in Bedminster, a Somerset County Road project for the entire length of the road from the intersection of Somerville Road and over the hill down to the Route 287 north entrance is well underway.

The road project started in the middle of last week, with the original target date for completion projected for this Friday.

On Thursday, Rich Lazicky, who is in charge of the construction division for the Somerset County engineering department, said the milling of old pavement and laying of new pavement now is expected to continue from next Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, Nov. 26.

During construction, the road should remain open to traffic, allowing people to get to their homes in The Hills area of both Bernards and Bedminster, Lazicky said as the job began last week. He added that police may detour drivers around the block at some points in construction.

Bernards Twp. Police Lt. Ed Reese said last week that no detours were planned, but local police will be on site to help control traffic and assist motorists.

"Motorists can expect to experience altered traffic patterns on Allen Road between Somerville Road in Bernards Township and Schley Mountain Road in Bedminster Township," Reese said last Wednesday.

To avoid disrupting school vehicles and commuters, the county decided earlier this year that the best time to do the road work is at night — all night, until it is completed.

The project will cost about a million dollars, Lazicky said. In some areas, where the road is most deteriorated, the surface will be milled down by about six inches and stabilized before new pavement is laid down, Lazicky said last week.

Last July, the Benards Township Committee approved a requested waiver from the municipal noise ordinance to allow the repaving to take place between the hours of 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m.
