Sidewalk, Storm Inlet Repairs Approved for $145K

Two contracts totaling almost $145,000 were awarded on Tuesday by the Bernards Township Committee for the repair of storm inlets and any damaged or buckled sidewalks throughout the township, with the goal of completing the work "before the snow flies."

The Township Committee awarded two contracts, with the larger being $110,030, both to DM Fernandes, LLC, in Cartaret.

That contract calls for the repair of broken or buckled sidewalks where needed, said Township Administrator Bruce McArthur.

A second contract, also awarded to DM Fernandes, approves the spending of up to $34,590 for storm inlet repairs.

Work will be undertaken at various locations throughout the township, with the goal of replacing approximately 1,400 square yards of sidewalk, or approximately 800 sidewalk slabs, said Township Engineer Tom Timko. Work is scheduled for this fall, Timko said.

McArthur said the both contracts will cover work for the year. Also last night, remaining $9,000 upspent allocation in a contract awarded last year for storm sewer replacements was canceled because that money was never spent, McArthur said.

Money for such improvements is budgeted, but not borrowed, in Bernards.

McArthur said that the work hopefully will be completed before snowy weather arrives.

The sidewalks to be repaired include both concrete and asphalt walkways, he said.
