Horse Care Mini-Workshop Offered for Riders and Non-Riders

Registration now open for horse care workshop to begin June 25.

in Basking Ridge is again offering Mini-Workshop 101 for adults and youth seeking to gain experience and confidence around horses through a combination of non-riding activities and hands-on practice. The workshop is aimed at both riders and non-riders.

Starting Saturday, June 25, Equine Mini-Workshop 101 will be held at the Somerset County Park Commission's stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. Classes are due to run from 1 to 3 p.m. for five consecutive weeks.

Participants will learn the proper way to safely handle a horse, groom, and tack up.  The parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle are discussed, in addition to horse breeds, colors, and basic horse care. There is no riding involved in this program.

Registration is available in person at the stable office and will be accepted up to the opening day of the workshops as space permits, according to information from the Somerset County Park Commission.

The fee is $55 for Somerset County residents and $92.50 for non-residents. Lord Stirling Stable is situated on 450 acres with 18 miles of trails, through woods and fields, one indoor ring, three outdoor rings, and an outdoor-jumping course. For additional information, please call Lord Stirling Stable at 908- 766-5955.

In addition, blue “BOBO (Buy One – Bring One) Fridays” bins now are located at the Lord Stirling Stable and the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, as well as at the Somerset County Park Commission headquarters at North Branch Park in Bridgewater.

The public is invited to drop off canned food or personal care items for donation to Somerset County food banks. Information on this event and other Somerset County Park Commission activities may be found on the park commission website.
