Low-Cost Male Cancer Screening Offered by Health Department

Registration is underway for the annual male cancer screening, scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Wed., June 27 at the Wellness Center, at 8000 Fellowship Road in Basking Ridge.

The clinic costs $30 for residents of the health department's member towns, and $40 for non-residents. Pre-registration is required.

The Male Cancer Screening Clinic includes a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test, an exam by a board certified urologist, a blood pressure check and cancer prevention information. This clinic is for men who are over 40 years old with a family history of prostate cancer, or are between 50 and 70 years old, and who do not have a urologist. This clinic is limited to those who have not been screened in two or more years.

The Bernards Township Health Department is a contracted health agency serving Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Long Hill Township, Chester Borough, Mendham Borough, Mendham Township, and Peapack-Gladstone. For more information, visit the health department's website.

The required pre-registration can be set up by phone at 908-204-2520 or in-person between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Bernards Township Health Department at 262 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge. There is a $5 processing fee for canceled appointments. For more information, visit the website.

“Early detection of disease and illness allows people the best treatment options and saves lives,” said Health Officer Lucy Forgione.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and about 1 man in 36 will die of prostate cancer, according to figures from the health department. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, only behind lung cancer.
