Volunteers Pitch in to Clean Up Their Hometown

Mayor's program draws help from local organizations in removing trash on highway ramps that are gateway into township.

Mayor John Malay and more than 25 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Bernardsville, the Lyons facility of the Veteran's Administration N.J. Health Care System and the Fellowship Village retirement community donated a few hours this weekend to clean up the Route 287 ramps at exit 30.

Armed with picking tools, gloves and garbage bags, and assisted by the Bernards Township community service department and local, the team tackled the big job of removing discarded cans, bottles, cigarette butts, wrappers and coffee cups thrown onto the sides of the highway ramps. This was the township's second clean-up day, with the goal of beautifying the entrance into the township. The first was launched in 2010 by last year's mayor, Scott Spitzer, and the local Beautification Task Force.

Malay thanked the supporters and acknowledged that as local budgets get cut, towns rely ever more on the community to help through volunteerism.
