Harlem Wizards Take to the Courts With Ridge Hoopsters for Fun Fundraiser

Hundreds attend Sunday afternoon fundraiser at Ridge High School to support Bernards Parents of Exceptional Children and new Hope Autism Foundation.

About 750-800 people turned up Sunday to cheer on the Harlem Wizards in a fundraising game against Ridge varsity basketball players, both boys and girls, and also coaches in the gym at Ridge High School.

The fundraiser, which resulted in both cheers and laughter, was organized to benefit the Bernards Parents for Exceptional Children, a local-based not-for-profit organization that advocates for children with learning and developmental disabilities, and also the Hope Autism Foundation.

Hope Autism Foundation was created about six months ago to advocate for parents of older students with autism and to look ahead for programs after those children graduate from high school, said Danielle Lumby, one of the organizers of the event. The foundation's new fundraiser will be a gala at Dolce, planned for November, she said.

However, Sunday afternoon's game was a fun time for children as well as adults, and a chance for both pros and local players to show off their moves on the court.

"The kids are having a blast," Lumby observed.
