Ridge Boys and Girls Golf County Champs—Again

Girls win county championship for third year in a row, boys second.

varsity golf teams with the girls placing as champions for the third year in a row, and the boys team back in the top spot for a second consecutive year.

The boys team won on Monday with a score of 295 which Coach Greg Zande said is a very low score. "We won last year with a 309," he noted.

Monday's county championship matches were played at Neshanic Valley Golf Course. For the boys team, senior Jack Stewart shot a 2 under par 70, coming in second place individually. Senior Sean Lee shot a one over par 73, and tied for fourth place place indivdually. Seniors Matt Samuels and Junior Harrison Schreider both shot scores of 76, Zande said.

The Ridge girls team, which , won the Somerset County varsity team championship for the third year in a row with a combined score of 310, said Coach Siobhan Devlin. Senior came in second overall, shooting a 71, she said. Hana Ku, a junior, took third place individually, shooting a 73, one over par. Senior Rachel Walsh came in fourth individually with a score of 80, and senior Amber Evans shot an 86 for six place overall, Devlin said.

"It's a dream team," Devlin said of the girls who make up this year's top foursome, with three of them back from last year.

"I think I got very lucky to have hard-working kids," she said, along with parents who are very supportive of the program.

"The leaders are amazing, the [team] fellowship is amazing, the parental support is amazing," Devlin said.

Devlin said recently that she has again can reach the top as state champions for this year. The girls team, which matches up against Hillsborough on Monday, was undefeated for the season as of Friday.

Nevertheless, Devlin noted this week that other high school golf teams have been working at lowering their own golf scores. Earlier, she had mentioned Montgomery and Hunterdon Central high school's teams as two to beat.

The boys team is scheduled to golf at the Cherry Valley Invitational next Monday.
