First 'Winter' Snow: Library Closed in Bernards, Open in Bville

Wet snow in this area — but Mountain Creek, higher and drier, is open. Nearly all Ridge athletic events are canceled.

For those who want snow to ski or just to play in for winter fun, their wish may have been expected to come true by Saturday morning.

But maybe not. The predicted few inches of snow was there to greet the dawn, but by later in the morning, an icy rain began falling on top of the white stuff.

The National Weather service was predicting snow and sleet to last until about 2 p.m., with a high temperature of about 30 degrees. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches supposedly is possible.

Theis closed, according to its website, and Saturday's events canceled. However, the Bernardsville Public Library will be open until its usual Saturday closing time of 5 p.m., an employee said.

Saturday night into Sunday should be merely cloudy, but very cold, with a low around 12 degrees, the NWS said. Sunday should see increasing clouds, with a chance of rain before 9 p.m., and rain and snow later.

Delayed opening? At least Saturday's snow didn't fall on a school day!

For those who want to drive — and some out on the road said there had been slipping and sliding by local drivers — the good news is that Mountain Creek ski area is open! Weather in that area is a little colder, and the icy rain we have here reportedly has remained snow up there in Vernon.

In anticipation of the snow, several Ridge athletic events had been canceled by Friday. Ridge High School Athletic Director Rich Shello on Friday afternoon said that other schools had canceled, but he expected other Ridge teams would wait until Saturday morning to make a call on whether scheduled games should be on or off. Here is the link to the schedule.

All but one of the the Saturday games was canceled, including the girls freshman basketball game against Bernards High School, scheduled for 9:30 a.m.; the wrestling varsity quad match scheduled for 10 a.m.; freshman, JV and varsity basketball games against Warren Hills Regional High School, at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.; and the junior varsity ice hockey team against Watchung Hills REgional High School, scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

But — as of late Saturday morning — the boys varsity ice hockey team was still on against Bridgewater-Raritan for 8:30 p.m.
