Girls Soccer Heads to 3rd Round in States

Team to face Watchung Hills on Friday.

The Ridge girls soccer team moves on to the third round of the state tournament with an away game against Watchung Hills at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, following the girls' victory over Piscataway on Tuesday.

The team continued their state tournament run with a hard fought 1-0 win over Piscataway on Tuesday. Freshman Chrissy Weyrauch scored her first goal of the season from a pass from her sister, Alex Weyrauch, (junior midfielder) in the 21st minute of the first half, said assistant coach Jessica Musumeci.

In the second half, Piscatway put on the pressure, trying to equalize the game, Musumeci said. As the game entered into the last ten minutes, Piscatway began to push up more players into their attack, putting more pressure on Ridge and their defense.

Erin Convery, freshman defender for Ridge, stepped up and kept the Red Devils girls with a one-goal lead, by clearing off the goal line in front of an open net.

Ridge girls soccer is matched up Friday against first-seed Watchung Hills for the State Sectional Semifinals. The last time these two teams met was at the Somerset County Semifinal round, where both teams tied, with Ridge advancing in the county tournament in penalty kicks.
