Ridge Girls Soccer Falls in Somerset County Final

Defense strong in defeat as Montgomery breaks scoreless tie in 47th minute.

The Ridge girls soccer team lost to Montgomery 1-0 Saturday in the Somerset County Tournament championship in Manville.

The Red Devils' defense had stymied most of their opponents this season, allowing only 8 goals in 19 games coming into the county final. They held off explosive Montgomery through the first half before Catrina Atanda scored the game's lone goal in the 47th minute.

After the half, Montgomery took just seven minutes to get the ball into the back of the net for the game's only score.  As time wore down, Ridge threw everything at Montgomery and put the ball on the ground in the penalty area seven times, but were unable to get the equalizer.

"I thought it was a tremendous game. After the first 20 minutes, we settled down. I couldn't ask more of my players. We had opportunities. I told the girls to be proud of themselves. They didn't give up and they should keep their heads up because they played tremendously. Montgomery is 17-1-2 for a reason."—Ridge coach Katie Donahue
