YMCA's Flag Day Race Rescheduled for Next Week

Tentative reschedule date is June 20 for fundraiser for homeless veterans that draws hundreds each year.

The Somerset Hills YMCA's 12th annual Flag Day 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk, a fundraiser for a program to assist homeless veterans, has been rescheduled from Tuesday at 7 p.m. due to weather conditions to a new date of next Thursday, June 20.

The rescheduled event also would begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA's main facility at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge. Race pick-up begins at 6 p.m.

The tentative date was confirmed by the YMCA later in the week.

Proceeds from the Flag Day 5K Run supports Valley Brook Village, housing for homeless veterans now under construction at the Lyons campus of the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care facility off Valley Road in Basking Ridge.

Community Hope of Parsippany, a non-profit organization in Parsippany, is sponsoring that project and also organizes the 95-bed Hope for Veterans Transitional Housing Program, also located at the Lyons veterans administration facility.

Funds raised "help our troubled and injured veterans rebuild their lives and have a place to call home," Community Hope says on the organization's website.

Online registration for the USATF-certified 5K will continue until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19. Online registration, which can be done here, is $25, or $23 for USATF members. The entry fee for walkers is $10.

Those who register ahead will receive a personal fundraising page so friends and family can provide sponsorships. More than 200 people had been signed up as of Wednesday, according to information from the YMCA.

Registration also may be made on race day for $30 per runner. Other donations may be made to the program.
